What is wire gauge?

When choosing wire, the "gauge" is the diameter or thickness of a wire. When steel wire was first measured, it was determined by how many times it was drawn through a series of dies of progressively smaller diameters. If you want a 9-gauge wire, you'll need to pull it through 9 successively smaller dies; for a 14-gauge wire, you'll need to go through 14 successively smaller dies. In order to strictly adhere to gauge standards, the diameter of wire is now measured with cutting-edge instruments.

When it comes to wire gauge, the thing to remember is the higher the number, the thinner the wire.

Doogood keeps a comprehensive range of wire gauges for all of our products on hand

What is wire tensile strength?

Put simply, a wire's tensile strength is the amount of tension it can take before breaking. If you compare two wires of the same diameter and length, the one with lower tensile strength will break under a lighter load.

The significance of this should be obvious right away. After all, if you're going to use wire for something like fencing, you need to make sure that it can withstand the expected amount of tension.

When the tensile strength of wire is less than the load placed on it, failure is inevitable.

However, you may be wasting your money if you choose a wire with an exceptionally high tensile strength when you don't require that wire to carry much of a load.

Doogood carries a range of wire tensile strengths, and our knowledgeable staff can help you select a wire that is tailor-made for your specific application, ensuring optimal performance with minimal wastage of materials.
